I have now been on the carnivore diet for 6.5 years. I have lost 227 lbs, I am off all medications, I have resolved my COPD, asthma, allergies, gout, blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and more.
I had the lungs of an 88-year-old in my 30s, diagnosed with COPD at the University of Saskatchewan. A Dr once pulled my mother aside and told her that people have died who had lungs better than I did.
I've struggled with weight my whole life. I tried all of the conventional ways of losing weight: calorie restrictions, weight loss apps, appointments with nutritionists, eating 6 small "well balanced" meals per day, using small containers to measure my food, every exercise program you can think of, shakes, juice fasting, you name it I probably tried it. I could lose 30 lbs, but then the weight loss would stop, I'd start gaining weight back and eventually weigh more than I did when I started.
In 2018 I was suffering a major gout attack. I was sitting on my recliner with my foot up looking for something on youtube to watch. I decided to watch a Joe Rogan podcast and they were talking about the carnivore diet and how people were fixing their health problems with it. My first thought was that it sounded pretty extreme.
I decided to research the Keto diet and tried that for the first 6 months. The fat started coming off and I felt better in the first week. I decided to join "World Carnivore Month" in January of 2019. I started a bit early, December 28 2018.
I've been Carnivore since that day. I lost the first 160 lbs in the first 16 months. When I started in 2019 everyone thought I was crazy. "What about vegetables, Vitamin C and the food pyramid? What is your cholesteral?" Now everyone I talk to knows someone who has fixed a major health issue by going Carnivore.
I don't track calories, I eat until I am full and then eat again when I am hungry. I used to only eat once per day (intermittent fasting helped my weight loss) but in the last few years I often have some leftovers later in the day after lifting weights.
I am 48 years old and feel better than I did in my 20's. I wake up motivated, I jump out of bed and am ready to get started on projects around the house and yard, vacuum the floors, hoe weeds, turn the compost pile etc.
I am also a big fan of fasting. Intermittent fasting (1-6 hour eating window per day) and extended fasting (48-72 hours with no food).
When time allows, usually in the winter when life slows down, I will still do some 48 hour water fasts. I just drink water with some salt and potassium to keep my electrolytes in balance. It is also a great way to overcome a stall in weight loss.
Fasting triggers autophagy, a process where cells clean out damaged components leading to cellular repair. This can contribute to mental clarity, detoxification, longevity and disease prevention. I also credit autophagy for not having any loose skin after losing 227 lbs.
I realize The Carnivore Diet and Fasting is a big change for most people, and sounds scary to some, so I've come up with a few improvements you can make in a series of babysteps. Do as many of these as you feel like, or do them all eventually.
